Q. Can you repair my windshield or should I replace the entire piece?

A. According to The National Glass Association, it is suggested that a repair to your windshield be corrected as soon as possible. By delaying even the most minor damage, you are actually allowing an opportunity for further damage. Though we do perform glass repair services, at Hillcrest Auto Glass, we recommend the long-term benefit of replacing the glass as a whole. By doing so, you have a guarantee that the crack will not reappear resulting in even further expense.


Q. How much protection does my windshield really provide?

A. As the number one most important safety restraint, your windshield provides up to 60% of the protection needed if you are involved in an accident that resulted in a rollover. In addition, your windshield also acts as a backstop for your passenger-side airbags should you or a loved one be a part of a front-end collision. If your windshield pops out due to a faulty installation, you may also become ejected from the car and the outcome may be fatal. Q. I have heard of the term OEM glass. What does it mean?

A. The acronym OEM means "Original Equipment Manufacturer", which by definition are the standards and regulations as established by the National Highway Traffic Safety Association. These standards relate to vehicle safety. Many of these regulations employ minimum requirements for windshield retention in the event of a motor accident. Because the windshield is the number one most important safety restraint in a vehicle, it is imperative that it remain secured to the car should there be an accident. As a result, the FMVSS, established originally on March 1, 1967 by the US Department of Transportation states that all vehicles manufactured on and after January 1, 1968 must be in strict accordance of the FMVSS safety code of safety standards and regulations. This safety standard also mandated that any windshield replacement or repair company also follow all safety guidelines as set forth. Unfortunately, not all companies are in compliance with such laws and it is important to know who is and who is not. Q. How long should I expect it to take to replace my windshield?

A. Depending upon factors such as the complexity of the replacement, the availability of the glass, the location of the vehicle, the make and model of the car, and other factors, the time required to properly replace your windshield may fluctuate. Q. What about my safety and registration stickers? Do I have to replace them too?

A. Absolutely NOT! In most cases, we are able to switch your stickers from the original windshield to the new one with no problem. However, in very rare occasion, a successful removal of the sticker may not be possible and it may have to be replaced. In such event, we will let you immediately so that you are aware of the need.


Q. What makes my windshield different from other glass?

A. Your windshield is constructed of a laminated safety glass, which is actually made up of two pieces of glass that are laminated together by a very thin sheet of vinyl which has been pressure-heated in a specially designed oven called an autoclave. This precise design is intended to provide maximum safety in the event of an accident. Should the glass shatter, the laminate vinyl is designed to prevent the glass from flying apart and resulting in further injury. Contrary to your windshield, your side and rear windows are made of "tempered" glass. Tempered glass is exactly that! The glass material has been heated or "tempered" to extreme temperatures then cooled rapidly. The benefit of the tempered glass is that the heating and cooling process allows the glass to be stronger than un-tempered glass of the same thickness. Also, because the glass is designed to disintegrate into small particles, there should be no large edges to cause injury to you or your passengers.

Q. Do I have to file my insurance claim myself?
